Both forms of painting are Traditional folk art forms belonging to two different geographical locations which describes local culture and traditions.
Similarities:
Material : Both Madhubani and Kalamkari use Natural Materials like plant based colors, cowdung and soot (Environment friendly colors and techniques)
Theme: Both are inspired by Hindu Mythological theme and are inspired from epics like Ramayana, Mahabaratha and also depicts court scenes and other natural objects.
GI Tags: Both Artforms have obtained Geographical indications in India.
Local styles: Both are very complex in nature and involve multiple layers of work and time.
Differences:
Tools and Technique: Madhubani uses brush / fingers to paint on mud-plastered walls and now processed on paper using cattle dung and water. Kalamkari uses pen made of Bamboo.
Influence: Kalamkari has Islamic influence due to Bahami rulers. Madhubani has Hindu influence with Tulsi plant appearing in all paintings.
Region: Madhubani flourished in Mitila region of Biharand and has no outside influence whereas Kalamkari flourished in Deccan Region of Andhra Pradesh and has significant influence of Persian culture.
Patronage: Madhubani was practiced and carried over by locals without much patronage but Kalamkari received patronage from Golconda, Mughals and British.
